Charlevoix’s Rob Boss accepts offer from NMU
By Chris Fiel
Former Rayder and 2002 Charlevoix High School graduate, Rob Boss has been named the new offensive line coach at Northern Michigan University.
Boss, 26, accepted the position while playing for the Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League, and comes on the heels of being named the League’s Offensive Player of the Week. The Rush, who recently clinched a playoff berth, has two games remaining.
On July 2, The Rush lost at Tampa Bay, and it turned out to be the final professional football game for Boss as he interviewed for the coaching position shortly after the game, was offered the job on the spot by NMU head coach Bernie Anderson.
Boss was aware that the decision to interview for the position at NMU would affect his playing days, if the position was offered to him. So after the hiring he made the decision to secure his long-term future and left the Rush.
The coaching move is a good start of what could be a long career on the sidelines for Boss, an NMU grad. Unless an offer from an NFL team comes along, his playing days are finished.
Boss, was the NMU defensive line coach last season while the Arena League suspended operations. At that time, Boss was also finishing his final semester en route to earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from NMU.
With the start of training camp just around the corner, he has a lot of work to be do between now and Aug. 10, the day players report at NMU.
Among Boss' duties, as it is for all college coaches, is recruiting. He said he isn't sure what his geographical territory will be, but it may include the Northern Lower Peninsula. For now, he is busy with administrative duties, working on late-season recruiting, meeting with the coaching staff and, in particular, the Wildcats' new offensive coordinator, Chris Ostrowsky.
Who knows what the future may bring? Someday we may see Rob Boss as the Head Coach at NMU or at a Div. I school, wherever he ends up he will bring hard work and dedication and most importantly success.
