Orpheum Bell Returns to Aten Place on July 24h
Ann Arbor-based sextet Orpheum Bell returns to Aten Place on Saturday, July 24th for an encore performance. Their music has been described as gypsy jazz, or country and eastern, and is as unique as their unusual musical instruments. Equipped with an orchestral ensemble of banjo, accordion, trumpet, shepherd harp, musical saw, cittern, guitar and dobro, double bass, various ukuleles and horned violins, Orpheum Bell really does defy any usual classification. Their performance will include a songbook of original lullabies, stomps, dirt-road ballads, and gypsy suites and waltzes, and is an evening of music that needs to be seen as much as it needs to be heard.
Relying on old, acoustic instruments, the band's sound moves from chiseled, plaintive song stories to articulate, richly played instrumentals. The members have come at their music from different angles; a classically trained harpsichordist, a rural folk polymath, a church choirgirl, one from Holland, another from the Ukraine. The collective members of Orpheum Bell are Aaron Klein (vocals, banjo, ukuleles, guitars), Annie Crawford (vocals, violins), Jimmy DeHeno (banjo, dobro, pedal steel), Katie Lee (vocals, violin, saw, autoharp, ukulele), Michael Billmire (accordion, trumpet, shepherd harp, mandolin), and Serge van der Voo (double bass, percussion). The group’s mastery of their various instruments along with their original songs brings all the elements together necessary for a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.
Aten Place is located 1/2 mile south of Cherry Hill Road on Old Mackinaw Trail in Boyne Falls. The venue is a ninety-year old oak frame barn with seating for 180, overlooking the Boyne River valley, in the shadow of Boyne Mountain. Tickets are $25 for two and $15 for singles. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 pm the day of the concert, with performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. Aten Place is a non-profit endeavor, and no food or beverage is sold on the premises. Many patrons bring snacks and desserts to share at intermission. There is also a covered picnic pavilion for those who wish to come early and enjoy the grounds and peaceful setting.
