NORTHERN MICHIGAN
Northern Michigan's 1st CD GOP Nomination Race Statistically Tied
One of the hottest races going into the upcoming August 3 primary is the GOP battle for the nomination in the 1st Congressional District and a new poll out Friday suggest the race could be a barn-burner.
According to a new survey by Inside Michigan Politics, Dr. Dan Benishek of Cyrstal Falls is in a statistical dead heat with Sen. Jason Allen (R-Traverse City).
Allen scored 19.3 percent to Benishek's 20.7 percent, with three other candidates, Linda Goldthorpe, Don Hooper and Tom Stillings all earning 2 percent or less. Goldthorpe has decided to suspend her campaign.
"The conventional wisdom all along is that the Tea Party types will split up the vote against Allen, a major, towering establishment figure," said IMP publisher Bill Ballenger. "This poll shows that isn't the case."
That same survey also showed that U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra is clinging to a six-point lead over primary opponent Attorney General Mike Cox in the Republican race for the 2010 gubernatorial nomination.
The poll, conducted by Practical Political Consulting (PPC) showed on the Democratic side House Speaker Andy Dillon was pulling away with 23.3 percent of the support compared to 7.7 percent for Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero. It should be noted, however, that 70 percent of Democrats remain undecided over who should be their nominee.
