EAST JORDAN – As reported earlier this month, East Jordan graduate Shaina Peters is taking her athletic skills to Ypsilanti and will compete for Division I Eastern Michigan University.
It’s rare for a northern Michigan athlete to have the chance to play for a Div. I school but Shaina’s accomplishments over the course of her brilliant prep career with the Red Devils put her in that position. She signed her letter of intent on June 9.
Peters, a fiery competitor who also shined for the Red Devils on the volleyball court and on the hardwood in basketball, posted an outstanding 24-6 mark on the mound as a senior, including a school record 301 strikeouts this season, while only allowing 32 walks. In addition, she had an almost unheard of .064 ERA. She was also a tough out at the plate, where she batted .357, with an on-base percentage of .514.
Peters, who was recently named the Charlevoix County News Player of the Year, was also selected as a First Team Lake Michigan All-Conference member, and received All-District and All-Region honors in Division 3. During her four-year career at East Jordan, she helped the Red Devils to a 100-36 record.
East Jordan veteran softball coach Meg Kitson believes Shaina will make her mark at EMU and had some words of encouragement for her former player.
“I wish her the best at Eastern,” said Kitson. “I hope that she has as awesome a career there as she had in East Jordan. I also hope that she can help open the door for northern Michigan, and these bigger colleges realize that we have a lot of talent here to offer.”
Shaina plans to major in business management while playing for the Eagles.
While her college career has yet to start, we know one thing; Shania brings with her a competitive spirit, the ability to take over a game, and she is a proven winner.
