Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey handled arrangements.<hr><br /><br /> <br /><br /><br />Clifford Duncan Stewart<br />(Dec. 5, 1927 – Aug. 26, 2010)<br /><br />Clifford Duncan Stewart, 82, of East Jordan, passed away early Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital.<br /><br />Clifford was born on Dec. 5, 1927, the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Allen) Stewart in Detroit. Clifford served in the United States Army.<br /><br />On Aug. 1, 1953, he married Mildred June Krause. Clifford worked many years for the Ford Motor Company and retired as a supervisor in 1982. He enjoyed golfing, boating and spending time with family and friends.<br /><br />Clifford is survived by his wife, Mildred; children, Robert (Sandy) Stewart, Julie (Donald) Worden and Bruce (Donna) Stewart; grandchildren, David, Amy, Lindsay, Heather and Kaylee; sister, Joyce (Clark) Hall; and brother, Roy (Julie) Stewart.<br /><br />A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 30, at Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City with pastor Jonathan Mays officiating. <br /><br />The family requests memorial donations are directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Boyne City Free Clinic.<hr><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Joel Brian Mendham <br />(March 27, 1984 - Aug. 24, 2010)<br /><br />Joel B. Mendham died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at the age of 26.<br /><br />He was born March 27, 1984, in Pontiac, Mich., to Robert and Tammy (Knapp) Mendham.<br /><br />Following the events of September 2001, Joel Brian Mendham, along with his brother-in-law, Brian Adams, and close friend, Nathan Adams, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to serve our country.<br /><br />Joel served two tours of active combat duty in Iraq during the height of combat operations. He came under fire nearly every day while serving overseas, and earned the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. Joel was a highly decorated Marine, having earned and been awarded some of the highest military honors available, including: Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Operations Ribbon (Operation Iraqi Freedom), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Certificate of Appreciation and two of the highest commendations available, Navy Unit Commendation and as mentioned above the Order of the Purple Heart.<br /><br />Joel’s passion was to serve others and as a result of his highly out-going personality, he was always the center of activity with hundreds of friends and loved ones who adore him. Joel was also passionate about providing assistance and service to other veterans.<br /><br />In Joel’s honor and memory, we have created the Joel B. Mendham Memorial Foundation for Veterans. This organization is an IRS 501c3, nonprofit foundation dedicated to providing assistance to Northern Michigan veterans, although no veteran, regardless of location, will be denied assistance. Donations can be made to the foundation and are tax deductible.<br /><br />Joel was a student at North Central Michigan College where he was studying history and had long expressed the desire to teach history and coach athletics at Petoskey High School. Joel was active in all sports while growing up, and was an avid outdoor enthusiast. One of Joel’s most beloved outdoor activities was as a member of the Jack Pine Hunt Club of Onaway, Mich., where he often hunted with his grandfather, father, brothers, friends and cousins, James Mendham (Alpena) and Charles Mendham (Holly).<br /><br />Joel is survived by his mother, Tammy K. Mendham (Union Lake); father, Robert W. Mendham (Petoskey); stepmother, Cynthia L. Mendham (Petoskey); brothers, R. Jason Mendham (Union Lake), Brian W. Mendham (Petoskey), Eric R. Mendham (Petoskey) and Brian Adams (Commerce Township); sisters, Rebecca R. Adams (Mendham) (Commerce Township), and Amber D. Mendham (Petoskey). Joel is also survived by grandparents, Raymond and Shirley Knapp (Walled Lake), Robert and Dolores Mendham (East Jordan), and William and Karen McDermott (Topinabee). Joel is further survived by numerous aunts and uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews.<br /><br />Joel’s life was celebrated in Petoskey at the Agape Baptist Church Friday, Aug. 27. Further service took place on Monday, Aug. 30 at the Orchard Lake Community Church in Walled Lake, Mich. Joel will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Mich.<hr><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Charles D. Wicker<br /><br />Charles D. Clarke <br />(May 26, 1950 - Aug. 21, 2010)<br /><br />Sharon V. Clarke, 60, of Charlevoix, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey.<br /><br />A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 27, at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. Pastor Sherry McGuffin of the Cross Of Christ Lutheran Church in Petoskey officiated.<br /><br />Sharon was born May 26, 1950, the daughter of Morton and Jean (Bruden) Clarke. She grew up in Wheeling, Ill., and had lived in Chicago before moving to Charlevoix in 1985. She earned a bachelor of science from Central Michigan University, and was a registered dietitian.<br /><br />She was an excellent cook and she loved her pets. Sharon will be missed by her many friends.<br /><br />Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, or to the Hospice of Little Traverse Bay.</p>]]></description>

Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries, irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, hardening of the arteries and a bone density screening. Pre-registration is required, call 800-710-1913.<br /><br />BOYNE FALLS<br />Meeting planned for Highway M-75 corridor study<br />Area residents and visitors are encouraged to attend the next in a series of visioning meetings the Highway M-75 corridor at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Boyne Valley Township Hall, 2489 Railroad Street, Boyne Falls. Residents and public officials will be discussing feedback from the last public meeting, results from an online survey, and determining the next steps for ongoing community cooperation and the implementation of the vision. The City of Boyne City, in partnership with Boyne Valley Township and Wilson Township, received a "Partnerships for Change" grant administered through the Land Information Access Association. In recent months the three municipalities have been working together and seeking public input to develop a common vision for the M-75 corridor. Several public hearings, goal-setting sessions and a survey were conducted. Once the vision and goals are finalized each community will take steps to implement the vision into their own master plans and ordinances. The city offered this service for a four-week period in June, and the fall collection period four-week period begins Sept. 1 and 1. The first pickups will take place in areas on and south of Main Street on Wednesdays, Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 22. Areas north of Main Street will be picked up on Thursdays, Sept. 2, 9, 16 and 23. Items that may be left for collection include furniture, appliances, clothing and construction waste (no garbage or yard waste). The total each week may not exceed two cubic yards. The September 18th Dirty Dog Dash is 3 miles of tough mountainous terrain with obstacles thrown in. This course will incorporate everything Michigan has to offer. Look to jump over fire, run through mud, and slip and slide down Disciples Run before crossing the finish line. Join the post party action after you've defeated the mountain in a celebration of completing the toughest adventure mud run in Michigan. Hosted by Boyne Mountain, you’ll enjoy some great scenery, an awesome resort, and other spirited people like yourself who have something to prove, not only to themselves but to everyone who said “You’re crazy for running something like that!”. In honor of September 11th and our countries service men, the Dirty Dog Dash will donate a portion of the entry fees to the Wounded Warrior Project. Race for a both a good cause and for yourself. If you’re feeling particularly crazy, we encourage you or your wolfpack to wear a wild costume or have a fun theme. There will there be prizes for overall speed and we will also award the people who go out of their way to have a good time. Spectators are also welcome to join in the festivities; Boyne Mountain has been gracious enough to offer some awesome deals on hotel rooms and 6-10 person condos. Spectators are welcome to hang out at the race and watch the other Dirty Dogs maneuver through the obstacles. The six-mile walk will begin at three Charlevoix County locations, including Elm Pointe in East Jordan, Whiting Park in Boyne City and Charlevoix Middle School in Charlevoix. Each location will conclude the walk at the Congregational Church in Ironton where lunch will be provided for all walkers. Organized locally, the Charlevoix County CROP Walk has set a goal of recruiting 100 walkers to raise $20,000, which will work to combat hunger here in our community as well as around the world. Twenty-five percent of all monies raised here in Charlevoix County will come back locally to The Good Samaritan of Ellsworth, Care and Share of East Jordan, the Charlevoix Food Pantry, Seventh Day Adventist and Trinity Pentecostal Church of God of Boyne City. Last year, over 100 walkers and volunteers raised more than $20,066.00, $5,000 of which was divide between our local food pantries.             <description><![CDATA[<p>Teacher sentenced in criminal sexual conduct case<br /><br />BELLAIRE — A former teacher at Ellsworth Community schools was sentenced in the Antrim County Circuit Court on Monday, Aug. 30, for criminal sexual conduct that was a felony crime against a 15-year-old student.<br /><br />Michael H. Peterson, 55, was sentenced by Judge Philip E. Rodgers Jr. to a minimum of 180 months and a maximum of 360 months in prison. Peterson had pled guilty to two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the 1st degree.<br /><br />An investigation was opened earlier this year by the Antrim County Sheriff Department, following information received by the sheriff that concerned possible unlawful conduct towards a female student. &nbsp;<br /><br />The Antrim County Prosecuting Attorney, Charles H. Koop, in conjunction with Erin House, Special Assistant Attorney General, issued a felony complaint alleging Criminal Sexual Conduct in the 1st Degree. Peterson was arrested on Feb. 2, following the investigation.</p>]]></description>
